Over-the-counter codeine should be used for a maximum of 3 days to help relieve mild or moderate pain.

Codeine is a type of painkiller called an opioid. If codeine is used for longer than 3 days, it might not help with pain relief anymore and there is a risk of dependency, or causing addiction, which can lead to withdrawal symptoms when the medicine is stopped.

This is why you need to speak to your pharmacist or doctor to find out what might be causing the pain and to provide advice or a treatment that’s right for you.

The maximum pack size for Solpadeine® Plus Soluble Tablets or Solpadeine® Max Soluble Tablets for adults will now be 24 tablets.

You can speak to your pharmacist for advice if you have taken codeine for 3 days and still need pain relief. Let them know you have already taken codeine for 3 days and how many tablets you took.

Your pharmacist may recommend you speak to your doctor to help find the cause of the pain and offer advice or suggest a treatment that’s right for you.
